Have you ever found yourself in a situation where your bills have somehow seemed to grow out of control? You where trying to be careful in your expenditures and yet somehow when the credit card bills started coming in, you where swamped with overwhelming payments. How did this all happen you ask yourself? You look over your credit card statement and it seems like all of your purchases where basically necessary. You rationalize why you "had" to buy this and that and how next month you will smarten up and stop purchasing as much regardless if you "need" it or not. However the next months statement looks quit familiar. The expenses keep piling up. So you start only paying off part of the debt owed. You keep figuring that you will somehow in the future start saving more money or somehow smarten up in the way you spend. Soon you find yourself not being able to pay off your bills unless you sell some of your personal possessions. You reason, well in the future, I will make more and buy these things back. But wait, you don't have to sell anything, the minimum payment you can still afford comfortably. You sigh in relief.
As the months go by you soon find that your minimum payments are steadily climbing. What was once a comfortable payment has now grown into a pretty big one, and you become troubled as you see that this is just your minimum payment, that the real debt you owe is well beyond your ability to pay off. Now is when you realize you have a serious
debt problem. But what do you do now? You look around your house seeing what you could now sell. Perhaps there is an item or two you could see yourself without. So you sell these items. But there is still an overwhelming debt load on your shoulders and you can't see a way out. What do you do now? The stress mounts and the confusion as to what to do sets in. You start asking yourself how this happened. How did you let things get carried away to this point? Now what are you going to do etc…
All too many people find this all too familiar. Yet it happens time and time again to the best of us. In today's world where one can simply buy now and pay later can often be a trap if you are not watching things closely. I think one of the best bits of information that could be taught in schools is proper budgeting and debt care. It seems like each year the problem gets more and more out of control. In a society that is so consumer driven mind you, I guess it is not all that surprising. But it negatively affects so many people's lives.
Well if you do find yourself in a similar situation to this, there are some things you can do. You will first want to learn how to budget and learn to manage your money more wisely. Although this can sound like a tough thing to do, in the long run you will be much better off taking proper steps now instead of letting things get out of control. Also you can talk to a professionally trained credit counselor/debt consolidation counselor. These people are trained to work on your behalf with your creditors to get you out of a hard place by negotiating better interest rates and often an actual reduction in the debt you owe them. It is worth your effort to inquire about such a service, see what they can do in your situation. They offer a free consultation and you are under no obligation to sign up with them. But they may just be offering what you are looking for, and that is to help get your debt problems back under control.
